MEDIA RELEASE - 24 January 2008
The spirit of Christmas is still alive in the Illawarra with close to $4,000 being raised for the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Christmas Appeal through Wollongong’s major Christmas event Carols in the City, which was held December 22, 2007. John Sandercock, Public Relations and Red Shield Appeal Director for The Salvation Army in the Illawarra, said the Salvation Army is delighted to have been the charity selected to benefit from this great community event and appreciates their support. “Our thanks go out to all the carollers who kindly supported our Christmas appeal during the event. To most people it simply means spare change, but to those in need it means the world,” said Mr. Sandercock. Mr Sandercock added “Within the Illawarra, in particular, our Christmas relief work is expected to provide assistance to approximately 750 families with food hampers and toys. This is through our Community Services Centre in Wollongong and our satellite centres at Warilla and Woonona”. “We were delighted to be able to support the Salvation Army with the Red Shield Christmas Appeal,” stated Stuart Barnes, General Manager of WIN Sports and Entertainment Centre. “We’re grateful to everyone who attended the event and helped raise money through donations and the sale of glow-sticks and candles demonstrating the true spirit of Christmas.” Support for the Salvation Army and the Carols in the City event was made possible by the generous support of the event partners, in particular Horizon Living and the Wideform Group of Companies, Investment Planning Services, Wollongong City Council, McDonald’s Illawarra, Cleary Bros, Australian Amalgamated Terminals, Partner IT, Illawarra Mercury, WIN TV and i98FM. |

MEDIA RELEASE - 7 December 2007 Over 5000 people will bring the WIN Entertainment Centre to life with the sounds of Christmas at Wollongong’s major community-based Christmas event Carols in the City on Saturday 22nd December, courtesy of Horizon Living and the Wideform Group of Companies. Tickets for the Christmas spectacular are free to the public and can only be obtained from the WIN Entertainment Centre Box Office from 9am on Monday 10 December. Carols in the City is a ticketed event and members of the public wishing to attend the event should get in early to secure their seats.
The 2006 event was an outstanding success setting a new standard in community Christmas carols in Wollongong. Carols in the City will again bring together some of the best in local and national talent including over 50 singers making up the People’s Choir. A host of national artists such as Wayne Scott Kermond and Hayley Jensen will lead the audience in some of the best loved carols.
“Christmas should be a time where people unite not only to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, but to also celebrate the community we live in. It is therefore fitting that we celebrate with a major community event such as Carols in the City.” stated Fred Ferriera, Managing Director of Wideform Group of Companies.
A special thanks was extended by Stuart Barnes, General Manager of WIN Entertainment Centre, to Horizon Living, the Wideform Group of Companies, Investment Planning Services, Wollongong City Council and McDonald’s Illawarra, who have all contributed significantly to help stage and bring the magic of Christmas back to the community of Wollongong.

| Local singers to fill the WIN Entertainment Centre with song |

MEDIA RELEASE - Wednesday 1 August 2007 Local singers to fill the WIN Entertainment Centre with song Following its success in 2006, organisers of the Carols in the City have already commenced preparations for this year’s event. One of the new initiatives will be a People’s Choir made up of 100 local people selected from the Illawarra. The Carols in the City team today launched its quest for local singers at the WIN Entertainment Centre, the venue for 2007 carols event. According to Musical Director of the event, John Spence organisers were inundated with requests by people to be involved in the event in 2006 and this year local singers are invited to register to audition for the choir. “Last year we had calls from so many people wanting to get involved in this event so one of the exciting musical directions we are taking in 2007 is to introduce the People’s Choir which will be a 100 person massed choir,” said Mr Spence. “We feel it is the perfect way to showcase the talented singers that we have within the region.” Interested local singers must be over 16 years of age and must have had previous experience in choral singing. “If you are interested in being involved you must first register to audition, with the auditions taking place on Saturday 18 August at the WIN Entertainment Centre,” said Mr Spence. Audition registrations will open on Wednesday 1 August and close at 5pm on Friday 10 August. Further information is available on the Carols in the City website, www.wollongongcarolsinthecity.com.au, which was also launched today with the support of local provider, PartnerIT. “The website is another exciting initiative that we have introduced this year and we are delighted that PartnerIT has chosen to support the event,” said Stuart Barnes, Producer of Carols in the City. “It will provide the local community with a central point in which they can access up-to-date information about the event for 2007 including details about performers, tickets and the programme.” The 2007 Carols in the City will be staged indoors at the WIN Entertainment Centre and will be held on Saturday 22 December 2007. |
